A month or so back I had a problem with a file system where mtab was
corrupted. This broke the tools that could normally fix the file system
while the file system was mounted.

This file system was a 2 gigabyte file, being used by user mode linux
(http://user-mode-linux.sf.net). Nothing proffered worked.

I finally was able to take down the user-mode-linux virtual machine.
Running "e2fsck filename" from the master hosting machine finally worked.
after restarting the virtual machine, it liked everything on the new
"hard drive" file and I'm back in business.

It was interesting that mtab being busted seemed to give the file system
repair tools a fit. I've used them before, when the file system had been
mounted without shutdown, and they repaired the virtual machine's file
system file just fine. As long as mtab was correct.

Even trying different superblocks did not help this problem.
