Linux Journal article was Re: [NTLUG:Discuss] Is it just me, or has traffic in this listreduced to a trickle recently?

Thanks again.

Maybe I should clarify what we're doing. As you probably know, I'm in
the middle of writing a series for Linux Journal on Linux in state and
local governments. The last article I submitted focused on the
Kindergarten through grade 12 Linux projects, also called the school
projects and K12Linux. From my observation of successful Linux
initiatives the K12 program has the most success and the least exposure
globally.

I'm proposing in my latest article that government advocates organize
similarly to the Schoolforge project(s). The concept they have created
has a elegance in its simplicity and it works. The SEUL site has
something like 627 software projects covering 26 categories, all devoted
to creating a complete school. The most impressive project I found is
the K12LTSP - a very refined Linux Terminal Server Project that we can
download. It comes in a set of three iso disks and it's a breeze to
install and get working. They also have methods of delivering Windows
and Macintosh applications to the diskless workstations.

Knowing the appetite in Government for diskless workstations, this
should become a "killer app".
The LTSP app is only one great application. They have fund accounting
programs, administration, distance learning, etc. etc.

So, tomorrow, I'm set up for meeting in Austin with the senate aide who
helped put SB1579 together and then with the Austin Posse of EFFAustin.

The DIR has already set up a software sharing program and with their
commitment to Open Source, I believe they could help promote a
government "Forge" project.

In the same vein, I'm considering a BusinessForge site. This would use
Schoolforge as a model. If you visit Schoolforge:

http://www.schoolforge.net/

take a look at the membership list. Also, if you visit the

http://k12linux.org/contents.html

take a look at the sponsors.

I just think that a BusinessForge would generate a lot of excitement and
it's some we can do right here, right now.

Having a number of Business articles in Linux Journal and/or eWeek, etc.
to prime the pump, should have substantial appeal.

So, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Feedback, please!

Tomas
