I think you are talking about logout/shutdown in KDE 3.1.1a, right? I've 
seen this problem as well in Gentoo. Well, since you have the same 
problem I  would conclude that this is a bug with KDE 3.1.1a and that it 
is not distribution specific.  I have noticed that the problem (on 
Gentoo) generally seems to happen when I'm logged in as root in KDE. On 
the other hand, if I logon as any other user I don't experience the 
blackout.  Since I haven't merged the latest KDE on Gentoo, I can't say 
whether a newer version will fix the problem. My workaround is that I 
just avoid logging in as root in KDE and I perform all root functions in 
a konsole session.
