Good thought.  Yes it is the logout/shutdown, but in my case it is Gnome 
2.2, and the user doesn't seem to matter - though I am hardly ever 
logged in as root so I would have to test that some more (as root).  
Some very few times it worked, but after that NG.  I have configured 
these machines to use a resolution other than the one originally 
"suggested" during the install - in the case laptop, a little higher, 
and in the desktop, lower.  Other than that they are pretty much 
"straight out of the box".  My experience with laptops would suggest 
that one cannot run the resolution at any but the suggested level, but 
this runs well except for the logout/shutdown issue, and I have never 
had the resolution issue on a destop before.
