Howdy,
   I am not sure I understand your problem.  I'll take a stab at what I 
think I see.  If you are seeing black because the monitor resolution is 
wrong(specifically, grub is set to a resolution high enough that your 
monitor can't handle it), try editing /boot/grub/menu.lst and lowering the 
resolution.

Some very few times it worked, but after that NG.  I have configured these 
machines to use a resolution other than the one originally "suggested" 
during the install - in the case laptop, a little higher, and in the 
desktop, lower.  Other
