I suggest the stable version of debian (currently 3.0r1) for the default
install. Libranet 2.7 appears to give you that. And then if a recent
enough version isn't in stable check for packages in the testing and then
unstable sections. Then for those very special programs that aren't in a
.deb format yet there is a conversion utility to keep track of the stuff
in .rpm that you have come to love.

The idea is to keep most of system stable and for those user apps that you
know about and can keep an eye on use a newer package.

MOzilla and others are probably suffering the syndrome where they depend
on a more recent lib of that which can't be replaced in the stable/testing
distribution becaus something else, probably lots of something elses,
depend on the older version. You may not even use those other programs.
its worth a try to update the package you want and its depends and then
keep an eye on what if anything else lost a lib it needed. Other
distributions just don't watch dependencies as closely as Debian.

You could also, depending on time and willingness, use the latest snapshot
of testing instead of the stable distribution. It's not so closely watched
by the security people but has newer stuff in it. And you won't get the
support offered by libranet. I'm only guessing they won't provide any
support for that. :)
