IIRC, ext3 is merely ext2 plus a journal file, so there shouldn't be any
problem moving back to a pre-2.4 kernel -- except that you'd lose
journalling.  If you unmount an ext3 filesystem, I think you should be
able to immediately remount it as ext2.
