If you want a very up-to-date Linux System (and since you've had
experience installing something like Debian), I'd recommend you give
Gentoo a try. Once it is installed, you just run 'emerge sync' and
'emerge world' periodically to get the most up-to-date System. Gentoo
usually puts in the newer programs/files one week (recompiled & tested)
after the new versions of those programs/files are released. Gentoo is
no more difficult to install than Debian is. I do not recommend Gentoo
for users who are new to running/installing Linux.

BTW: Gentoo-1.4 has been released, and, now, the CD iso images are
available so that Gentoo does not have to be installed by the network.
However, you do need a network connection to update or keep your system
up-to-date once it is installed.
