In /etc/ssh/ssh_config, is the following set?
    ForwardX11 yes

If this isn't set, the "ssh" command isn't setting up
a tunnel between the 2 machines.  If you don't have
that set, and you aren't using "ssh -X davidson" then
it will default to localhost:<nextavailablewindow>, I
believe.  You can also force a "export
DISPLAY='gorky:10.0'" or whatever a "export | grep
DISPLAY" outputs on the 'gorky machine'.
