Ok this is making a bit more sense your system is now setup for cups. IMHO
it is a better printing system but could use some work in the area of
documenting what is going on.

Edit your /etc/printcap and add the entry

OfficeJet500:

now edit the file /etc/cusp/printers.conf

Make sure your printer OfficeJet500 is listed. Check the device make sure
it is set for the appropriate one and that it is set to accept jobs. Once
you have done all of this restart cupsd

/etc/init.d/cups restart

and you should be good to go based off what you have mentioned so far.

If you are still having trouble with the lp commands try using the lp-cups
and lpr-cups.

I did that, and at one point was able to even print a test page from
there, but only from there. I just now tried and, well, not anymore.

I'm not sure what would be easiest, to just re-install RH9 and start over?

Problem probably is that this system was originally RH8, but I upgraded
it to RH9. In other words, I just booted to RH9 and chose the upgrade
option, and (probably) should have just done fresh install and saved my
home dir, but I didn't, I wanted to see how the upgrade option worked.
I guess now I'm paying for it.

Or not... I don't know for sure, just have suspicions. I don't know
what else it could be. All I know is I don't seem to be able to figure
it out. I just don't quite know enough to figure it out on my own and
it seems that being able to use a printer shouldn't be so tough.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm just not smart enough to have a printer, and
I should just give it to someone that's smarter and get my self a
typewriter. :)

Sorry to be such a pest.
