Stick with 1.x  You will be much happier from everything I have heard.

Don't do that.  Upgrading the glibc means a complete upgrade of
everything and you should just reinstall if you are going to do that.  I
would recommend just installing from source, but I think you need the
apache sources (-devel might work) to do that and it can be tricky.
