I have always found it cheaper to put together PCs from Fry's,
newegg.com, etc.. Pick up a MOBO, case, CPU, RAM, HDs, etc. and the
"OS tax" isn't even an issue. It's also much easier to get exactly
what hardware I want without having to pay for things I don't want.
That's how I've built every PC I've ever owned, as well as every PC
I've ever built for friends/family.
Also, I'd never want someone else to install my OS for me, but that's
just a personal preference I guess. I don't like any of the Linux
distributions that I have ever used, and having someone at Gateway
or MomAndPop Inc. click-through a RedHat 7.3 installation is not what
I'm looking for. I'd just wipe it when I got home anyway.
