On my kmail (v 1.5):
. point at the inbox, 
. right click and choose folder properties.  
.'expire mail after __ days' appears there. 

Don't know if this is related or not. I saw this setting WAAAY back in kmail 
in a menu, but can't find it without the right-click tonight on this version.

I've been using kmail for about 2 years now, and have no complaints.. The 
latest upgrade even included restricting html automatically to show the 
source in the mail box with a 'click here' link to see it formatted.   Very 
handy with dealing with spam and trojans.
