Howdy,
  If you want to start a little cheaper while you are testing, just buy
the two Intel GB nics.  Use a crossover cable to connect the two
machines and see what you transfer rate is.  If it is worth it, you can
then go buy the GB switch.  If not, don't bother.  This will give you
the highest performance your system is capable of.  Even a good switch
slows things down a few percent.
