for local robotics, there is http://www.dprg.org ( but the URL is all I
know about them ) I think I saw linux in a few of their pages. 

I'd LOVE to build a robot that used a Mini-ITX motherboard that ran
linux, but I just don't have the electronic skills or knowledge to get a
project like that started. 

I've got a Mini-ITX motherobard and DC-DC converter. I can get some
batteries at Tanners and have a robotics platform ready to roll, but
controlling the motors via the USB or I/O port is out of my grasp.  

( There is the $500 unit that some place was selling that would make a
good controller... but $500 for a motor controller is a bit steep for
me. ) 

If someone in the grapevine/richardson area wants to help me build a
robot, let me know. ;)
