I've played a LOT with Lego Mindstorms robots. Those are a lot of fun
because the motor control and sensor stuff is nicely done for you - so
you can concentrate on software (which you can write in gcc under Linux
and download into the robot by InfraRed link) - and on mechanical
systems - which are nice to do in Lego because you can quickly try
a dozen configurations before you settle on something to write code
for.
Several people on the Lego robotics mailing list have used PIC boards
to drive Lego Robots - so there is a lot of interfacing expertise there.
