One nice feature of Debian GNU/Linux is that upgrading from one stable
release to the next is seamless.  In fact, if your apt sources file
follows the stable track ("stable", "testing", unstable" are three
tracks you can follow) rather than following releases by name ("slink",
"potato", "woody", "sarge"), the upgrade can be automatic.  There are
people who installed Debian in the late '90's, and have upgraded to each
new release without incident.  They didn't lose any uptime unless they
wanted to upgrade kernels.
