Like others, I tend to map the really annoying (or even dangerous if on the
kid's computer) sites to 127.0.0.1. Mozilla also has site block too, at least
for images. Right click on an image and pick "block images from this server"
(i.e. the server that sent you the image which may not be what's in the URL).

What sites? I'd be interested in seeing what they do. Also, what browser
(and version) are you using?
