This is not the case with this machine.  It only has 2 slots for memory
and both sticks of memory are single sided.  I tend to think it has
something to do with a physical problem with the motherboard, ie,
flexing of the motherboard making/breaking contact with
something...possibly a cold solder joint somewhere.  This machine is not
THAT old...it should recognize at least 512 Megs of memory.
