If you have LILO installed, at the initial LILO prompt, type
linux single
You should then be able to mount the root filesystem and
edit your /etc/shadow.
If this doesn't work, if you have a Knoppix CD or almost
any relatively contemporary dist CD will allow you to
get to some kind of rescue/recovery shell.
