I've been using VMware since before v1.0 and I've only needed to
purchase upgrades twice, IIRC. Upgrades are not the usual annual or
semi-annual most companys try to force you to do. In the past when
they've done an upgrade it comes with significant improvements in the
performance of the product.

Now that being said, they are under new management so that could change.
I hope the new ownership isn't going to change the quality of the
product or the user retention approach from the past.

License agreement says 1 license per installation. It's not clear if
that means 1 per user or 1 per machine. To get multiple users on a
single machine you need to give group write access to the vmware
installed directory. Caveat, I have not reread the agreement in several
years.
