My summary of this thread is that I should get a Orinoco Classic card or a 
card with an Atheros chip set and that should work on a fresh stock install 
of just about any major distro.  

My understanding of the difference between Orinoco Gold and Silver is that 
Gold supports 128bit WEP and may have a longer range.
