My mom just turned 80 on Wednesday. This past Feb she asked me to get her a
computer and set it up. She was used to her "Dell" out in Calif (running
WinME), but after quizzing her about what she used it for, I put Mandrake 9.0
on the new one. (Why 9.0? Because it is what I have AND my software works). And
Opera. And the printer and the scanner. She just returned after a couple of
months back there and told me "That damned Dell! I sure am glad to get back to
this one".
So, I second the opinion that the best distro is whatever works for you. Since
all of my mom's work is basically on line (web browsing, banking, web e-mail,
etc), and she has Open Office, she doesn't need anything from M$.
Plus she is immune to all those M$ virii and worms and I don't have to
constantly go to Durant to fix her system, which would happen if she were
running Winders. I can handle the occasional telephone support call.
