Couple of different things you could do:
Add entries to %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Statically assign WINS entries
If this server is using AD/DNS - multiple A records

Subject: [NTLUG:Discuss] linux dhcp client and microsoft dhcp server
I can use a linux dhcp client to allocat an IP Address
from a windows DHCP server.
Say my machine name is linuxserver and the ip address
I get is 172.16.14.11.
I have a windows box and use DHCP to get a ip address
and my windows box get 172.16.14.12 and it's name is
windowsbox.
Now... from linux or windows, I can do a
ping windowsbox and it resolves the name to the
ip address and everything is fine. If I do
ping linuxserver, I get host not found.
So... somehow the windows DHCP client/server are
exchanging the hostname of the client and updating
a DNS ( or windns ) entry on the windows server.
Is there a easy way to have this same functionality
with a linux dhcp client and windows dhcp/dns server?
I know that there are dynamic dns servers for linux
and other linux server approaches, but I'm here at
work and I want to integrate into the windows
servers they use at work.
Thanks - jack
