OK, I'm hijacking this thread.   I'm slow when not connected...

It seems to me both of my redhat 8 and 9 boxes will not start X windows a
la gdm if dns is off-line (or my internet connection is down).   In fact X
starts and dies fairly quickly as it is repeatedly re-inited.   If I change
to runlevel 3 and log in as my user, startx will bring up x-windows after
some delay (some network timeout period apparently - but way longer than a
couple of failed dns lookups)

I give my boxes host names, and put those in the /etc/hosts file (along
with localhost), but they are not in dns.

Just curious if anyone else has noticed this.  I don't think it happened in
RH6 or 7.
