The primary difference between cron and anacron is that anacron will catch
up on the cron jobs if the machine has been off a while, where cron will
just skip anything that is past its due time.
If your machine is not updated very often, then no, there should be no ill
effects if this is not run every day. The only problem will be that you
cannot locate files easily using the locate command if they were added after
the last time you updated. For those of us that cannot remember the
directory structure de jour, locate is a very handy tool.
