Storage Area Network.

A network of storage devices. Most often, Fibre
Channel based networking, using a Fibre Channel
     switch between host and storage.

Network Attached Storage.

network attached storage describes any disk type
of storage space that is part of a LAN or WAN
where data is stored on a stand alone device
     specifically designed for this purpose

SAN and NAS hardware are conceptually very similar.
However, SAN hardware tends to be somewhat more
"burly". 96G cache on a larger SAN unit is not
at all uncommon.

Fiberchannel also might provide a performance boost
over ethernet.
