[NTLUG:Discuss] RFID Beginners' kit?

I'm curious if anyone could offer any suggestions in the area of RFID 
systems development.  Googling turns up hundreds of link-farm type 
sites, and lots of manufacturers, but nothing seemed to stand out as any 
sort of generic standard.  The several sites that I saw selling 
developer toolkits seemed to be oriented towards Windows.

Any listies played with RFID, and have any pointers?

This is just for self-education - I don't have any particular purpose in 
mind at the moment.
