Xine might have been compiled not to look for it. It all depends on the
builder.

Are you are running it as a different user than who logged into X?
If so, then the video device is owned by the user who logged in.

Use "xauth" to authorize the other user.
Or just try "xhost +" for a dirty hack to allow all and see if
that is the issue.

Again, sounds like you are running it as a different user than
who logged into X. The audio device would be owned by the user
who logged in.

If you want, temporarily try "chmod go+wx /dev/dsp" which will
give everyone access to the /dev/dsp device to see if that is
the issue.

When someone logs into XDM (or GDM/KDM), scripts setup various
devices for ownership/access for the user that logs in. If
you su as another user, they will not be able to access certain
devices which have been reserved (not even root sometimes --
it all depends).

What distro is this? Fedora? (I've had 0 issues like this).
