Howdy,
  You might also look and see if there is an FCC id number and google on
that.  You said you had initially tried a generic 1024 x 768 setting. 
Which refresh rate did you choose?  Especially if you think the monitor
is not a great one, try the lowest refresh rate, which for 1024 x 768 is
probably 60 Hz.  For 800 x 600, it is 56 Hz.
