I've contracted/consulted at several companies in the metro area (and elsewhere) and one thing that always amuses me is the number of times I've gone into a place, talked to the CIO or whomever in management and been told basically "Nope, we don't use any of that open source stuff here, I don't allow it" and then I go talk to the actual admins and I find out "Yeah, our [email | DNS | firewall | web proxy | etc] are running on Linux".

If I were to make a (barely) educated guess though, I would estimate well over half of the companies that have any kind of IT/IS department implement Linux in some manner.  If the company is using one of the "mainstream" flavors of Unix, the chances of them using Linux rapidly approaches 100%.  When you consider how many companies there are in the metro area, we're probably talking in the low hundreds at least.
