Have you checked your .xsession file lately?  Here's a link to a page

I Don't remember about kdm, but I do know gdm has the option to select 
Gnome, KDE or last sessions.  Usually when this happens to me, I have to 
select the Gnome or KDE session instead of the last or failsafe session, 
and that tends to fix things from then on.
