One might think it is off-topic at first glance.
But a bunch of Linux experts talked about this one day in the mid-'90s.
They discussed such details, the business of providing a new and
innovative solution.
And TiVO was born.
So if costs of technical and cost feasibility come up among other issues
in a discussion that is clearly focused on Linux -- be it a home-grown
solution or the merits of a Linux-based solution (like TiVO) that has a
huge community following of hacks, I don't know if it's such a bad
thing. ;->

Subtotal Cost of Ownership (SCO) for Windows being less than Linux
Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) assumes experts for the former, costly
retraining for the latter, omitted "software assurance" costs in
compatible desktop OS/apps for the former, no free/legacy reuse for
latter, and no basic security, patch or downtime comparison at all.
