Separate the distribution (OverTheAir, CATV, Internet, physical DVD) from
the Display (Computer Monitor or TV). And storage (local HD, VCR, remote
file server) too.
Pick any point in that 3-space and you can figure out a reason for it. What
you need to do :) is to figure out how to make it pay for itself.
Moreover, many of those points have a computer involved in them, and thus
can be an interesting use of Linux.
For example, if everybody on your street downloaded the same episode of CSI
from the TV network's servers at 9pm, it's a terrible waste of bandwidth. A
neighborhood Linux box could pull ONE stream and redistribute it. The box
could also replace 'national' commercials by ones of local interest. That's
basically what the cable company does... except it's done using IP not CATV.

Just my opinion, but just don't see much use in downloading movies or TV
programs from the internet, if I watch movies or TV I'll use my TV or go to
the theater. But this is a bit off topic...
