The only thing that makes this different from the analogy is the fact the
linux kernel can be compiled for the PPC architecture relatively easily.
There is a serial port that would allow for a terminal session to be
configured and it wouldn't be to difficult to get most of the hardware
working. But I agree with the idea of it being more work than most any one
is willing to do esp when you think it already gives you all the
functionality of linux under the hood. If you disable the wdt and stop
myworld you effectively have a simple linux box ready to install whatever
you want to run on it. Sans X and the like due to the lack of driver
support for the video. Things are slightly changed with series 2 but there
are other options for getting in and making it do what you want.
It won't even be problem until much later when TiVo Guard comes of age.
This is where the whole concept of DRM is at right now. If you think about
a lock on a door what does it really mean. Does it mean you can't get to
the other side if it is locked? Not really if you take the time to learn
how locks work or have the right equipment to bypass the door completely.
Locks are merely deterrents to persuade you not to enter. The same will
hold true for DRM in the future they will become ways of deterring people
from abusing the rights of the copyright holders and nothing more.

After a bit of googling, I think it would be very difficult. One person
used the analogy of getting windows to boot natively on a macintosh.
Perhaps it can be done, but it would be a lot more work than any one
person is likely to be able to do.
