Generally, DSL is considered to be more reliable than cable but of
course it is not perfect and can be affected by unpredictable factors.
If you already pay for phone service, DSL is usually cheaper than cable.

The cheaper DSL service levels usually use PPPoE which is supported by
Linux but will probably require at least a little more effort than a
standard ethernet connection.
I currently use speakeasy.net for my DSL. They have high speed options,
and liberal use policies that allow you share your service, run servers,
etc. And Linux is completely supported. It is not cheap though.
