[NTLUG:Discuss] Best NIC

Actually, under high loads I've not been that pleased with the Tulip chip.
It's also a bit long in the tooth now...

With the Intel 100s, there are two drivers (e100 and epro100 or some such
names) because some people won't place nice with each other. Depends on the
situation which is best.

With 3Com, I've just not had any issues.

Let's see...

Firewall: Adaptec Starfire 6915 (4 port)
Tigger (ntop development): 3C905 + Intel 100/pro (2 port)
Zebra: motherboard
BarnSwallow (file server): 3C905

Howdy,
I would say there are two that stand above the rest. They are the Intel
nics and the DEC tulips. Intel bought DECs nic line and put the tulips out
of production, but there were so many made that you still find them. I have
at least 6 spares. The Intels are maybe even better.
At one time, they were way too expensive, but you can find them cheap on the
surplus market now. Then, a noticeable step down comes the 3com and then
everything else. I don't hesitate to use a 3com, but if a tulip or Intel is
available, I'll take it. I would not use anything else on a system with
high network demands. All my top three choices are well supported on just
about any Linux.
Good day,
Ralph
