I wouldn't try to use apt for SuSE.  You can define installation sources in 
the YAST installer and it will take of dependencies for you if it can.  One 
of your best sources for rpms is Packman, http://packman.links2linux.org/, 
that site is usually pretty good at telling you what other packages you need 
to install to make what you want to install work.  If you use YAST to install 
them (download them and click on them in Konqueror and YAST is invoked to 
install the rpm) it will take care of most dependency problems.

On the other hand I ditched SuSE 9.2, which I thought was a great distro, for 
SimplyMEPIS 3.3 test 2 (final version due out any day now) and have the 
entire Debian apt pool to install from
