[NTLUG:Discuss] FC3 Gnome kaput; What now?

I applied about 150 updates from the red button, a few at a time.
Someplace along the way, the Gnome desktop was damaged. The error
message box says "eggcups unexpectedly quit" and lets me send an error
report to Bugzilla. 

The crash occurs after I log on.

No icon appears on the desktop, and the desktop is just a solid blue,
not the FC3 screen. In effect, the Gnome desktop is unusable. I also
can't log off (I still have terminal mode so I issue a shutdown).

I was told to "yum update prelink" by the Bugzilla people, which I did,
but to no avail.

Does anybody have suggestions? Remember, I'm a newbie so you need to be
more specific than with a pro.

At worse I suppose I can reinstall from the FC3 disks, and just not
apply updates.
