I'm also trying to program the PIC with linux, but I haven't gotten very
far with it yet. I started with www.gnupic.org for my information.
I've tried installing PiKdev on my Ubuntu Hoary system and it hangs on
initialization. That is a far as i went with that.

SDCC(sdcc.sourceforge.net) is an embedded C compiler that supports the
16 and 18 series PICs. I have been using this compiler with intel 8051
chips and it seems to work great. I haven't tried it personally with
PICs yet though.

I am in contact with a Gary Champ(lastname at microchip.com) and he is
tracking down a Linux port of the MPLab IDE from Microchip. Apparently,
one of the field engineers at Microchip knows something about linux and
decided to port their IDE for the good of mankind, unofficially of
course. Microchip regularly receives requests for linux support but
still has no plans to officially do anything about it. If this port
materializes I'll let everyone know.

Sorry I don't have anymore personal experience to offer up yet, but I
have to do some hands on learning soon. When I discover anything, I'll
let you know. Feel free to email me on or off the list.
