Actually, some aspects of OS X are very open (i.e., OpenDarwin) ,
others are very much proprietary (i.e., GUI APIs). But to say that
the Mac is "very opaque" is quite a generalization.
I've not found a GNU or open source application yet that doesn't
compile and work under OS X...I'm sure there are some out there, but
the ones I need work just as if they're running on a Linux box.
