dd if=/dev/hda of=backup.image bs=1024

We use this method to "ghost" our lab drives across NFS with various
flavors and builds of Linux. We create a "master" image, and then
boot our machines into a single-user command line and fire up dd.

Low-brow, but it works faultlessly.
