[NTLUG:Discuss] GUI recomendations

The thing about GUI stuff is that if any of the ones out there
were truly, significantly worse than the others in every way, it
would cease to exist through lack of support. If any one were
better than all the others in every way - it would be the only
one left standing.
Every surviving window manager has some kind of a benefit that
the others don't have - be it speed, eye candy, lean/mean minimalism,
application support, toolkits, memory footprint...they all have
*SOMETHING* going for them.
So simply asking which is 'the best' - or 'the worst' will always
depend far too much on what it is you need out of it.
This is true of many things over which we have long and bitter
flame wars.
Think of programming languages - it's pointless to argue whether
C++, Python or JAVA is 'best'. They all exist and are well supported
and widely used - so they are each best in at least one regard. However,
NOBODY programs in Algol anymore - it's utterly inferior to C and Pascal
and went from being the premier 'structured' language to being utterly
completely unused within a very few years of the widespread availability
of C and Pascal.
So arguing about an absolute best is pointless. All you can argue is
'best for some specific purpose'.
