Has anyone signed up for Verizon's FiOS?
They ran the fiber down my alley and I am thinking of switching from
Cable Modem.
http://www22.verizon.com/FiOSForHome/channels/FiOS/root/package.aspx
They sell:
5 Mbps Download for $34.95
15 Mbps Download for $44.95
30 Mbps Download for $179.95

All are 2 Mbps upload.

Cable modem is $43.95 before taxes and around $50 per month after all
the add-on taxes. So Verizon is pricing to get cable modem people, with
slightly slower at much cheaper, or much faster at slightly more.

I have 6 computers with three different operating systems. They have a
tester and the WIN98 with a 2.6 Athelon and 1GB memory was deemed O.K.
for the 5 Mbps line but not sufficient for the 15 Mbps line. (?) The
Ubuntu systen never got a response back from the check :)

I went to the COMCAST site and they say their speed is up to 6 Mbps.
Personally I have not seen anything better than somewhere between 300
and 400 kbps on a download. So I don't believe anybodys advertised
rates.

The other thing that makes me worried is that we have Verison DSL at
work in Garland, and sometimes in the afternoon it gets down to 5 kbps
(based on Verizon's speed test). I could go faster with a dial-up modem!

Anyone with experience?

Kip
