My thanks to all who replied with suggestions.  It was very much
appreciated!  I think I'm up and going now.  The solution was to
remove files

"I have had no more problems with "Installation" failures I did this.

The "Download" problem fix is to find and delete corrupted download files.
My corrupted downloads left a bad file in my home directory of---

"~/.yast2/you/mnt/i386/update/9.3/patches" (per a the suggestion from
Robert Pearson) and going out to

www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/16592.html

(per the suggestion from Gilbert Morrows).

I'm a bit of a newbie, so I'm lucky I didn't shoot myself in the foot
messing around in root, but it all worked.
