Yes, source for xv (v3.10a IIRC) is available.  I'm quite sure I have it 
and it's also probably on my distro disk too (or at least I'd be 
surprised if it wasn't).  You can also download it off the net last I 
looked...yep, check out http://www.trilon.com/xv/.  You are correct that 
the author would like some compensation if used for more than personal use.

If you use KDE, bringing up the dir that contains the pics should show a 
thumbnail of the pic, and clicking on the pic will of course show just 
it in all its glory.  I've a got a dir of some pics of my kids and it 
works well that way.  Of course, it's only about 20 pics and displays 
pretty quick; I don't know how it would work if you had hundreds, but I 
could see where that could slow your system down a bit. :-)  Obviously, 
some organization into sub-dirs would fix that.
