I use 'xv' (http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/3964) - it's simple -
but fast and it doesn't make thumbnails unless you ask it to - but once
you do, it caches them so you don't have to remake them every time.
If I recall correctly, it's free for personal use - but I don't think
you get source code.
