That one way to do it (it's the way I do it.)  Another way to do get  
your external IP address is to query the router.

There's also one more step: somehow something on your network has to  
let the outside world know what its new external IP address is.   
Dynamic DNS is probably the most popular way.  But e-mail would be  
another.

Whatever you eventually come up with, please do let us know how it goes.
