Hi Brian.
I completely agree with your statement about solidarity but I believe
that specific Linux distributions are probably not the appropriate
vehicles for that means. Solidarity in our case is the Open Source
movement in general and the freedom to choose what software we
eventually decide to run whether it be specific applications or, in
this case, distributions.
When a new user presents themselves to you and mentions that they are
interested in "Linux" we unfortunately don't have one distribution ISO
to create a CD from to hand them that is "Linux". We have the option
and freedom to recommend specific distributions or a distribution that
we have had good experiences with personally.
The purpose then of the Ubuntu group is to provide technical support for
those who already use Ubuntu Linux, a field guide for experienced users
who are curious about the distribution, and as the launching point for
a beginner-friendly distribution for those who are interested in using
Linux but aren't sure which distribution is right for them. This also
allows individuals who wish to further support Ubuntu to socialize and
discuss topics that are only of interest to other Ubuntu users and
supporters.
Please understand that I am not asking that anyone switch distributions
from what they are using specifically to join the Ubuntu team. In fact
I would prefer that those in the group who have found their particular
distribution niche stay with what works for them, by all means! Choice
is really the beauty of Linux after all, right?
Hopefully I was able to answer your question concerning the purpose of
the group, though. Thanks for asking!
