Type this address in firefox - about:config
In the search bar you now have type - mailto
Double click this line - network.protocol-handler.app.mailto
Change the value to /usr/bin/thunderbird  (or the appropriate 
thunderbird app name...i don't use it)
Restart Firefox to take effect.
